Return to Team Knight Rider

Rick Copp waves at everyone.
David Goodman waves at everyone.
moderator: So guys...is this your first time chatting live on the internet?
Rick Copp: Yes
David Goodman: Yes
Rick Copp: But we're very excited about it.
David Goodman: Very excited.

moderator: Lets go to the first question from our audience...
moderator presents the speaker with question #3 from Gleek:
Were you guys involved with the original series or just fans of it??
David Goodman: Just fans. We were too young to be writing for TV back then.

moderator: How old are you guys...
Rick Copp: 33
David Goodman: 34

moderator presents the speaker with question #10 from donutgirl:
If you could drive any of the 5 cars/motorcycles, which one would you drive?
Rick Copp: I would drive Domino cuz I love speed. I love the color/
Rick Copp laughs hysterically.
David Goodman: And I would drive Dante because I'm concerned about safety.
Rick Copp: Domino is the Mustang and Dante is the Expedition
David Goodman: Right.

moderator: Why don't we start off with the premise for the show.... What is it about exactly???
Rick Copp: Basically the concept with the original series is that one man can make a difference. In the new show, we learn that sometimes one man is not enough.
David Goodman: And these five operatives and their five vehicles are here to take on larger than life villains and threats. They work for the Foundation for Law and Government just like Michael Knight did, however the Foundation has gotten a lot bigger over the years and so the problems they face have also gotten bigger.

moderator presents the speaker with question #2 from Gleek:
What spawned the idea for Team Knight Rider???
David Goodman: looking to make money.
Rick Copp: Universal
Rick Copp laughs hysterically.
David Goodman laughs hysterically.
David Goodman: Seriously, we knew that there we alot of people who watched the old show,
Rick Copp: Hopefully bring in the fans of the original series.
David Goodman: and we wanted to give them a show that they would enjoy that wouldn't be like the old show, Exactly like the old show that is.

moderator presents the speaker with question #5 from Gunsnroses:
What's the story with those wierd motorcycles in TKR?
Rick Copp: The idea behind that is it's a combo car. Two of our operatives share the same vehicle. It's a high pursuit and when it splits it becomes two motorcycles. Which comes in handy when someone fires a missile between them. They can just split and have it zip between them.

moderator presents the speaker with question #24 from Juliaann:
Will we be told what happened to Micheal Knight?
Rick Copp: Absolutely. The character of Michael Knight is going to be a very big part of the new show. You may not see him right away but his legend will be an intregral part of our stories.
David Goodman: Hopefully Mr. Hasseloff will cooperate.
Rick Copp laughs hysterically.

moderator presents the speaker with question #8 from Gunsnroses:
Will Kit be making an appearance in TKR??
David Goodman: Absolutely. But not right away.
Rick Copp: We will be developing astory that Kit is a very big part of. You'll have to tune in to find out just what that story is.
Rick Copp chuckles in amusement.
David Goodman: You'll pretty much have to watch the whole season.

moderator presents the speaker with question #16 from babe-o-rama:
How did the two of you come together as a team?
Rick Copp: We were both assistants for a film production company in NY and decided to write spec scripts together. From that, we were hired on Golden Girls and spent five years doing sitcoms but our true love has always been action-adventure. We have concentrating recently on getting into that area.

moderator: You guys wrote for Dream on? Which episodes did you guys pen???
Rick Copp: We wrote the one where Eddie gets a sitcom in LA and Martin feels he is losing him as his best friend.
David Goodman: It's called Long Distance Run Around.

moderator presents the speaker with question #9 from donutgirl:
Which character did you most enjoy creating?
David Goodman: We love them all.
Rick Copp: Trek is a character that we have tried incorporating into many shows we've done and finally found the exact fit in Team Knight Rider.
David Goodman: A unique spin on the boy genius character. He's a combination of Doogie Howser and Bill Gates.

moderator presents the speaker with question #4 from Gleek:
How did you guys come up with the new characters, and more importantly, the new cars!?!
Rick Copp: As for the characters, we wanted five individuals who would blend as a family. We didn't want to go the usual Mission Impossible route where everybody gets along. We wanted more of a dysfunctional family. In terms of the cars, we wanted to complement the personalities of our characters by creating computer chips for each individual car that were extensions of their driver's personalities.
David Goodman: Or maybe a hidden aspect of the character that isn't outwardly apparent, but as you get to know you begin to understand. Kitt was such a strong character that we had to do alot of work to come up with five characters
David Goodman: that weren't Kitt, but were unique in their own right.

moderator presents the speaker with question #21 from tkrfan:
Where did you guys go (separately) on your last vacation?
David Goodman chuckles in amusement.
Rick Copp chuckles in amusement.
David Goodman: We haven't had vacations. We're working too hard.

moderator presents the speaker with question #17 from babe-o-rama:
Did either of you know ten years ago that you would be the creators of your own TV show?
David Goodman: Rick did. I didn't.
Rick Copp laughs hysterically.

moderator presents the speaker with question #23 from spicoli:
So you moved from Pontiac to Ford?? How come?
David Goodman: We knew we'd be getting this question. One... we needed five separate cars. Five very unique and distinct cars. The combo car is not Ford. The other three are. And they're unique, easily identifiable vehicles.
Rick Copp: And the models Ford offered best matched the personalities that we created.
Rick Copp grins evilly.

moderator presents the speaker with question #18 from babe-o-rama:
When are we going to have the cars on to chat?
David Goodman: I should probably explain to you that the cars don't actually talk.
Rick Copp: This is news to me. I was ready to set up a date in time.
moderator: Really!!! We want chats with the cars!!!
David Goodman: We'd love to do that.
Rick Copp: But let's let the show air so you'll get to know them and you'll know what kinds of questions you want to ask.

moderator presents the speaker with question #27 from Juliaann:
What are the differences in the show Knight Rider and team Knight Rider besides the obvious ones?
Rick Copp: I think the biggest difference you'll find is we're trying to inject a little more humor into this show. Another difference is that we're attempting more James Bondian plots than the original series. Since both David and I are both huge James Bond fans. And with 5 cars, you need larger stories.

moderator: Not to sound rude....but what about a little sex appeal....will this show have any of that as well??
Rick Copp: Just look at our cast and I think that they'll speak for themselves.
David Goodman: Amen.

moderator presents the speaker with question #19 from babe-o-rama:
I know you used to write for Wings, do you guys like to watch your own shows on TV? Will you watch this one?
David Goodman: Absolutely.
Rick Copp: We're not gonna miss it, even we're the only people in America watching it.
David Goodman: The great thing about this show for us is that we're really finally getting to do the kind of show that we would watch. Not that we didn't like our sitcoms, but this was the kind of show we really loved growing up.
Rick Copp: The A-Team.
David Goodman: Not just Knight Rider, but Mission Impossible, Star Trek, MacGyver.

moderator presents the speaker with question #31 from Maui808:
when does the show start
Rick Copp: The week of October 6th. Check your local listings. We're cleared in 95% of the country so hopefully everyone will get it.: And if you don't get it, just write to your station.
David Goodman: And if it's in a bad time slot, write to your station.

moderator presents the speaker with question #25 from Juliaann:
What are the capabilities of the 5 vehicles?
David Goodman: That's a big question. We haven't limited the abilities of the vehicles, but so far they have missle launchers, laser beams, ejector seats... The Beast F150 has a flame thrower.
Rick Copp: X-Ray visionSurveillance equipmentAnd many more things that you'll yhave to tune in to see.: We don't want to give everything away.
David Goodman: And they go really fast.

moderator: do the women in the show drive female cars?? or vice versa
Rick Copp: Yes, the women drive cars with female personalities and the men drive cars with male personalities.

moderator: Do they ever drive each others cars???
Rick Copp: Yes, depending on the mission. We will do that purposefully so that we can have fun with the different personalities teamed up with the different cars.

moderator presents the speaker with question #53 from kittcar:
Will any of the vehicles have the red scanner light on the front?
David Goodman: No. We decided that the red scanner light was unique to Kitt and it plays an important part in a later story.

moderator presents the speaker with question #48 from Jinxed:
From the orignal series My favorite charcter was Kitt's programmer Bonnie...anybody like her on your show
Rick Copp: We have a variety of supporting characters. Nobody exactly like Bonnie.

moderator presents the speaker with question #45 from kittcar:
Will the Character Devon still be part of the show?
Rick Copp: Unfortunately, Mr. Mulhare has passed away and we have every intention of paying tribute on the show. Realistically, we can't bring the character of Devon back.
David Goodman: And what will probably be the fourth episode to air, an episode called KRO, is dedicated to Mr. Mulhare and the story of it links the original show to our show.

moderator presents the speaker with question #55 from Jinxed:
Will Kitt's Archenemy Goliath make a show?
Rick Copp: We haven't planned that yet. We do have an evil car named Crow.
David Goodman: And we wouldn't rule out any characters from the original show returning.
Rick Copp: Especially Mr. Hasselhoff.
moderator: For those of us who forgot, who was Goliath??
David Goodman: Goliath was an evil truck.

moderator presents the speaker with question #47 from mpajaro:
Any plans for TKR toys and other merchandise?
David Goodman: You bet. Coming soon from Mattel. A whole incredible line of toys.
Rick Copp: We just saw them last week. So if you want to see the toys, watch the show!
David Goodman: And the toy designers say they represent the cutting edge in toy design.

moderator presents the speaker with question #6 from Gunsnroses:
If you had to be a pasta suace, which suace would you be??
David Goodman laughs hysterically.
Rick Copp laughs hysterically.
David Goodman: Pesto.
Rick Copp: A heavy cream sauce.

moderator presents the speaker with question #32 from mpajaro:
What are your favorite episodes from Classic Knight Rider?
David Goodman: We love the ones with evil cars... KARR...
Rick Copp: We try to pay tribute to KARR in the episode we talked about earlier called KRO.

moderator presents the speaker with question #22 from tkrfan:
Did either of you major in some sort of writing field in college?
David Goodman: No, I was a Political Science major.
Rick Copp: I was a film major but the whole time just wanted to get into television.
David Goodman: Me too.

moderator presents the speaker with question #56 from Sid:
What's the pilot about?
David Goodman: The pilot is about a group of terrorists called Fallen Nation who kidnap a famous general.
Rick Copp: like Norman Schwartzkopf
David Goodman: And this general was the mentor of one of our characters Jenny.
Rick Copp: who is an ex-marine.
David Goodman: The team has to stop this group before they launch a nuclear missle against Washington D.C.

moderator presents the speaker with question #40 from mpajaro:
What are your feelings about the other Knight Rider remakes, KR2000 and KR2010?
Rick Copp: When we created this show, we decided to focus on the mythology of the original series and not the subsequent TV movies.
David Goodman: Which we didn't capture the spirit of the old show. Which we didn't think captured the spirit of the old show.

moderator presents the speaker with question #54 from Sid:
What is the advantage of having super vehicles with personalities? How will they relate to the stars of the show?
David Goodman: Like Rick said, it's one big dysfunctional family.
Rick Copp: But also in terms of the stories, these cars can think for themselves Which comes in handy when our people are in trouble.
David Goodman: And sometimes, causes a little bit of trouble.

moderator presents the speaker with question #15 from babe-o-rama:
How did you get your start in television?
David Goodman: We mentioned earlier we wrote spec scripts, and a woman we knew had contacts at Golden Girls and they hired us.

moderator presents the speaker with question #46 from PeterApockotos:
Do you read unsolic scripts?
Rick Copp: Unfortunately, the studio won't allow us.

moderator presents the speaker with question #57 from mpajaro: What are the chances of TKR becoming a cult favorite.. the next Xena or Babylon 5?
Rick Copp: From your mouth to God's ears.
David Goodman: Amen.

moderator presents the speaker with question #58 from Sid:
What do you think will be the future of the real automobile industry do you think that we will ever have cars like this?
David Goodman: I think given the current technology of computers, it's a long way off, but why not.

moderator presents the speaker with question #49 from PeterApockotos:
Is TKR shown in Florida?
David Goodman: It should be.
Rick Copp: Yes, in several markets. My parents live there so I've already investigated.

moderator: Can you give us a run down on the character names car/driver?
Rick Copp: The team leader is Kyle Stewart and he drives Dante, the Expedition. Then there's Jenny Andrews. She drives the Mustang named Domino. We have Duke Depalma who drives the Ford F150. Called Attack Beast. Then there's Trek who drives one half of the combo car. His half is called Plato. Finally, we have Erica West and she drives Kat. Kat is the other half of the combo car.

moderator presents the speaker with question #61 from JaemeyR:
I am currently writing a script for a sitcom. DO you have any advice for a future writer on how to get really into the business?
David Goodman: Yes. You can always make it better.
Rick Copp: And keep writing.

moderator presents the speaker with question #59 from Jinxed:
With shows like Viper on how well do you think TKR will be recieved by the public?
David Goodman: The advantage that we have with TKR hopefully is name recognition so that people will at least give us a chance. And again hopefully we think they'll like what they see.

moderator: What are some of your favorite TV shows and movies???
David Goodman: We've mentioned alot of our TV shows.
Rick Copp: David is a Trekkie.
David Goodman: Trekkeer.
Rick Copp: We love action adventure shows and movies.
David Goodman: I'm a big fan of the Brady Bunch Movie.
moderator: Event Horizon??
Rick Copp: Didn't see it.
David Goodman: Me neither.
moderator: Cop Land
David Goodman: I liked Copland. I didn't love it.
moderator: The Game???
David Goodman: Haven't seen it yet. We've been very busy.
Rick Copp: We've been doing this thing called Team Knight Rider. We haven't been out much.
David Goodman: I just saw Airforce One and we did an episode of TKR called Sky One which you'll see later in the season, but I just want to say, we came up with our idea long before that movie came out.

moderator presents the speaker with question #63 from mpajaro:
Have you seen any of the TKR fan web pages?
David Goodman: Sure. We check them every few days.

moderator presents the speaker with question #68 from Sid:
What's your favorite kind of car?
David Goodman: As I mentioned, I'm concerned about safety, so I drive a Volvo.
Rick Copp: I'm thinking of getting a sport utility vehicle. I don't know what that says about me.

moderator presents the speaker with question #34 from mpajaro:
What are the most important new ideas you are adding to the franchise?
Rick Copp: The biggest is using a team instead of one man.
David Goodman: And we're adding a mobility, so like in the original show, they travelled around in a van. Our team travels around in an airplane.
Rick Copp: A C-5 military transport. This is the largest plane in aviation history.
David Goodman: It can make vertical take-off and landing. Has a garage...
Rick Copp: A gym, a kitchen
David Goodman: Crew quarters... And a situation room which is our central command center.
Rick Copp: It's our Enterprise.
David Goodman: And he said I'm the Star Trek Fan.

moderator presents the speaker with question #71 from Jinxed:
As a collecter I'd like to know if there will be any TKR comics
David Goodman: Not as yet, but we're hopeful.

moderator presents the speaker with question #64 from Sid:
Do you havedirection about how we could get a chance to work as television producers?
David Goodman: We broke in as producers as writers which is a way that alot of people do. So if you're interested in writing, that's an advantage. But we don't know how to break into the other kind of TV producing.
Rick Copp: That's not our experience.

moderator presents the speaker with question #65 from kittcar:
What will happen to the KITT display that recently left the Universal public lot? Will there be a new display car (like Domino)?)?
David Goodman: Yes.
Rick Copp: And hopefully, you'll see all 5.
